Overview

Living in Deerfield

Deerfield is a village of about 900 residents in Deerfield Township, in eastern Lenawee County, Michigan. William Kedzie of Delhi, New York, bought land here in 1824 and moved to the site two years later, becoming the first postmaster when a post office opened in 1828. The settlement was first called Kedzie's Grove and was renamed Deerfield in 1837 for the many deer in the area; it incorporated as a village in 1873. The River Raisin forms most of the village's southern border, and its compact downtown is centered on Carey Street. Deerfield is the birthplace of actor and philanthropist Danny Thomas, and it shares the Britton Deerfield school district with neighboring Britton.
