Overview

Living in Oregon

Oregon sits on Lake Erie in Lucas County, immediately east of Toledo, on land once part of the historic Great Black Swamp. The area was organized as Oregon Township in 1838 and grew through the 1900s as a rail, port, and refining center — British Petroleum (BP) and Sun Marketing both opened refineries here around the turn of the century, historically two of the city's largest employers. Residents voted to incorporate as a city in 1957, and Oregon adopted its charter the following year, taking on the motto “Opportunity on the Bay.”
